Introduction to College-Level Teaching for Graduate Teaching Assistants

What is GC 591? Heading link

GC 591 is a 2-credit hour course designed to support graduate TAs and instructors in their teaching at UIC. This course provides an overview of student-centered, evidence-based teaching practices and a discussion of classroom scenarios and current teaching experiences. Whether a first time TA or returning after a few semesters, this course is designed to empower graduate students to teach with confidence, skill, and success.

This semester long, in-person course meets weekly and is offered during the fall and spring semesters.

During Spring 2025, the course will meet in person on Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 pm. To register, search for CRN: 48011.

Course Objectives Heading link

During the course, graduate TAs will:

  • Learn about student-centered, evidence-based teaching strategies and how to apply them immediately in the classroom.
  • Discuss how to navigate classroom scenarios and troubleshoot just-in-time teaching challenges.
  • Reflect on their own teaching practices and identify areas of strength and growth.
  • Build community support and share their own teaching success with other grad TAs also invested in teaching and learning.
