Does Leaving the University Mean Leaving Academe?

We don’t suddenly stop being scholars because we need to pay bills.

"We have been approaching the career possibilities of humanities Ph.D.s by using career diversity as a kind of dressed-up exit door. But that approach doesn’t allow for the possibility that there might be people who work in nonacademic jobs but still want to remain active in the academic community — to pursue their own research, publish and present at conferences, and participate in the other ancillary activities that contribute to the production and dissemination of scholarship.... We don’t suddenly stop being scholars because we need to pay bills."
