Job Posting: Assistant Director for Graduate Recruitment and Retention

The Graduate College at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is seeking an Assistant Director for Graduate Recruitment and Retention who will be responsible for assisting with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of recruitment and retention strategies for the Graduate College (GC). The Assistant Director recommends and implements targeted outreach strategies to recruit potential students. The individual will build upon and maintain relationships among faculty, students, and staff at UIC and at other colleges, universities, and organizations locally and nationally, to recruit graduate students to UIC graduate programs. The incumbent also coordinates graduate application fee waivers, applications to graduate programs, and recruits students from the UIC Summer Research Opportunities Program to UIC graduate programs. The Assistant Director is responsible for the coordination of retention activities and services and assists with the design and delivery of comprehensive support services to ensure academic success as measured by retention, time-to-degree, and graduation rates for the students recruited thought the Graduate College’s efforts.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Implement, maintain, and assess recruitment strategies for prospective students and assess the process for responding to inquiries that result in applications. Monitor and support the application process for student recruited through the graduate college’s programs and services.
  • Coordinate and attend recruitment fairs and events. Manage and support “contact campaigns” across campus and various mediums to assure excellence in the recruiting process.
  • Meet regularly with the Assistant Dean for Diversity and Recruitment, SROP Director, GC staff to discuss admission, recruitment, and retention initiatives and collaborative efforts necessary to support students’ success.
  • Serve as a liaison to student, faculty, and staff in the improvement of programs that increase and/or sustain recruitment goals and enhance student success as established by the unit leadership. Create, maintain, and communicate a complete list of support services for faculty and staff to reference in relation to student retention, and recruitment on GC website.
  • Implement retention plan using activities and resources from across the Graduate College Urban Health Program and report on an actionable set of retention measures.
  • Coordinate and track student success once they matriculate at UIC activities across the graduate program’s diversity programs related to the overall retention strategies and inform campus leadership regarding needed changes to mitigate any retention declines.
  • Develop measurable retention strategies and action plans for key student cohorts across Graduate programs. Identify priorities, strategic goals, and action plans to enhance student progress to degree completion. Collect, analyze, and report student persistence/learning/ satisfaction data and compare it to internal benchmarks and national/peer institution data.
  • Meet with prospective and current graduate students individually or in small groups to facilitate retention activities. Respond in a timely manner to student and faculty inquiries.
  • Facilitate communication between prospective students and faculty as necessary.
  • Research and keep current on best practices for student success.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops on applying to graduate school, graduate funding, and success in graduate school. Refer student to appropriate support services as needed.
  • Identify and report on underrepresented minority graduate student’s retention issues that may lead to or contribute to attrition and propose changes. Work with Assistant Dean for Diversity
  • and Recruitment to collect and analyze student enrollment data to identify attrition trends. Participate in all appropriate meetings including program Urban Health Program meetings.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required; in research-oriented related field preferred. Doctoral Degree in Behavioral or Social Science or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in recruitment and retention experience at a university; in graduate recruitment preferred.
  • Experience working with underrepresented minority undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Knowledge of best practices in admissions, recruitment, and retention in higher education; of trends, challenges, and opportunities in graduate education; of Diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organization, interpersonal skills, knowledge of enrollment management application (Slate); intermediate proficiency with MS Office computing software.
  • Experience with Blackboard and online teaching preferred.
  • Able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; team-oriented and able to work closely with peers.
  • Ability to articulate the value of the Graduate College.
  • Knowledge of ADA and Title IX laws and regulations; of the Graduate College programs and services preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
  • Analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills; and database management preferred. Social Science research, survey methods and statistical software skills (SPSS) preferred.
  • Ability as a self-directed, adaptive independent thinker with problem solving abilities; a high level of interpersonal skills and professionalism.
