The Urban Health Program (UHP) was established in 1978 with the mission to recruit, retain and graduate African American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and Indigenous pre-college, undergraduate pre-health, graduate, and professional students with interest in the health sciences. The Graduate College is part of UHP in collaboration with the seven health colleges: College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Social Work, College of Nursing, Retzky College of Pharmacy, College of Applied Health Sciences, and School of Public Health.
The Graduate College Urban Health Program aims to support prospective and current underrepresented graduate students who are conducting health sciences related research within the UIC community.

- Recruitment & Outreach
- The UHP program director and coordinator travel to various conferences to meet prospective graduate students.
- Follow-up with prospective graduate students, meeting 1-on-1, and/or facilitating connections with department of interest.
- Collaborate with various departments, faculty and/or staff in efforts to recruit prospective graduate students.
- Graduate Student Success
- The Graduate College UHP program coordinator may host and promote various workshops for UHP graduate students around academic, personal, and professional development to ensure graduate student success at UIC and beyond.
- Opportunity for 1-on-1 and/or group check-ins to meet with the UHP program coordinator and connect with other graduate students.
- Community Building
- Opportunities to connect with other graduate students via UHP-wide programming, group check-ins, and more!
