How AI-supported writing is erasing complexity in HE
(A global perspective)
"Institutional responses to generative AI in higher education have been organised almost entirely around misconduct. Detection software, revised integrity policies, viva-style verification and an expanding informal lexicon of 'the tell' have absorbed a considerable amount of academic labour over the past two years.
That emphasis is understandable. ‘Misconduct’ is the category for which universities already possess procedures. It is also, we argue, the wrong analytical frame.
In our research [...], we propose the concept of academic erasure to describe a phenomenon that operates through compliance rather than transgression: the progressive disappearance of epistemic labour, disciplinary voice and intellectual risk from student writing, even as every visible feature of that writing is preserved and often enhanced."
