Survey of Earned Doctorates

The Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) is a federal agency survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) for the National Science Foundation and five other federal agencies.  The SED gathers information annually from 45,000 new U.S. research doctorate graduates about their educational histories, funding sources, and post-doctoral plans.  See more information from the NORC website.

Survey of Earned Doctorates

For use by doctoral students attempting to graduate.   The Survey is required and is completed online.  An email will be sent to the Graduate College verifying that this has been completed.

To access and complete the online Survey of Earned Doctorates you will need to:

  1. Access the survey website at the link below.  At the website, provide your name, institution, department, graduation month and year, an email address, and an email address to which your personal confirmation should be sent. (These may be the same)  An email at the end of the registration process will be sent to that address.
  2. Advance into the survey using the link at the end of the registration process.  The survey may be completed later or suspended partway through and returned to later, by using the email sent after completing the registration.  This email will include a direct link with a PIN and password.
  3. A confirmation email will be automatically sent to the Graduate College at  It is recommended that students enter their own email address in the Email Confirmation screen at the end of the survey in order to receive a confirmation email as well.
