     SPEAK SLOWLY AND CLEARLY
 
     Acknowledgement
o  Non-Verbal Gestures: Eye contact, nodding, hand signals
o  Verbal :
     That’s a good/interesting question/Yes, right, ok
     Repetition of question
     S: Like, what’s and acid?
     TA: An acid? Well, an acid is..
     Paraphrase
     S: Uh, I’m not clear, on the, uh, idea of co-culture….
     TA: You mean, what is co-culture?
 
     Understand the Question!
o  Ask the students to slow down or repeat the question
     Would you mind slowing down for me? Could you say that again, please?
o  When a student’s question is unclear
     S: Uhm…I like…don’t get it…you know, I mean, why do we do it like that?
     Use the “WHAT” strategy: Why do we what?
o  When you just need a minute to process the question:
     Well...let me think
     Let’s see…
     Give me a second to think about it….
 
     Be patient
 
     Provide examples
 
     Call on others
 
     Check with the student to make sure you answered the question
o  Did I answer your question?
o  Do you need more clarification?
